At the Mount Nelson, a classic black-and-white checkerboard marble runs the full length of the hotel's hallways, up the staircase landings, and through the lounge, holding the property's period character together underfoot. Laid on the diagonal beneath grand columns and antique furnishings, the pattern reads as timeless rather than dated, and continues to hold up under the daily footfall of a working hotel. It's the kind of installation where the stone's job is to disappear into the architecture, letting the building's history carry the room.
